Classes
DVIDA and ISTD Syllabi
The DVIDA (Dance Vision International Dance Association) and The ISTD (The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) publish internationally recognized dance steps with supporting videos and written materials and have a certification process. The Ballroom Dance Center uses these materials as the backbone of our training for both staff and students. Our instructors are DVIDA certified.
New classes start at the beginning of each month and last forty five minutes. We feature one dance per month for maximum learning and retention. Our group classes include the following dances:
Core Classes
The following six dances are the classic Ballroom and Rhythm dances. Private lessons will enhance and develop your group learning.
Core: American Style Smooth (Ballroom)
Waltz - Elegant, smooth dance in 3/4 time, from Austria
Foxtrot - Only American born ballroom dance; big band or jazzy music
Tango - Argentine origin; dramatic, staccato dance; strong drum roll
Core: American Style Rhythm
Rumba - Slow, romantic Latin dance from Cuba
Swing - East Coast Swing; upbeat rhythm dance with triple steps; big band and pop music, huge in 30's and 40's
Cha Cha - Slow Cuban mambo with characteristic triple step
Club Dances
The most popular "party" or club dances are offered almost every month
Shag (Southern Swing) - Southern style of swing danced to bluesy, pop and beach music
Salsa - Popular “first cousin” of Cuban mambo danced to smoother, jazzier music, breaking on the “1” beat
Salsa Rueda - Salsa "square dancing" with a caller cuing dancers to trade partners in a circle
West Coast Swing - Slotted, club style swing; danced to slower music
Hustle - Originally a 70's disco dance; popular, fast, club style movement, danced in a slot, to a strong beat
American Style "Plus"
Samba - Brazilian dance; festive, strong dance beat; has a "bounce"
Mambo - Fast Cuban Latin dance; precursor of salsa, breaking on the "2" beat
Bolero - Slow, romantic Latin dance with sweeping movement
Lindy Hop - Original swing style from the 30's featuring circular basic, throw outs and tricks
International Style
These dances are recommended for the intermediate dancer after completing their core and club dances
International Standard (Ballroom)
Quickstep - Lively dance popularized on TV, characterized by rapid movement around the floor with hops, skips and spins
International Viennese Waltz - Austrian, elegant dance; faster than Waltz; 3/4 time
International Foxtrot - Smooth, stylish and classic form of Foxtrot, very different from American Style
International Waltz - Similar to American Style, but danced in closed hold
International Tango - Highly stylized, staccato version of the Argentine dance
International Latin (Ballroom)
International Rumba - Sensual and classy; slower and danced on a different beat than American Style
International Cha Cha - Faster than the Cuban born, American Style; fun syncopated rhythm also known as triple step or cha cha cha
Paso Doble - Bullfight and Flamenco style Spanish dance
Jive - Fast, aerobic version of Swing
International Samba - Originally from Brazil, with upbeat rhythm and drums
Special Classes
Argentine Tango - The original style of Tango, this intimate dance teaches leading and following better than any dance because of the improvisational nature of the movement. Recommended for intermediate dancers or those comfortable with less structure.
Wiggle Jiggle Giggle - This class is designed for women to develop confidence and classy sensuality in their body movement, using elements of Latin, pop, and exotic dance. Part exercise and warm - up, part routine oriented, this woman's only class includes optional performances at dances and shows.
Dance To Stay Fit - This exercise class uses elements of all the ballroom and Latin dances to provide a moderate to intense workout.
Technique - Learn elements of Ballroom and Latin dance including balance, posture, footwork, turns, and basic principles of the physics of movement.
